ABILENE – The ACU men and women will prepare for a home contest of sorts against Tarleton State on Tuesday as both teams try to avenge an earlier loss last month in Stephenville. Because of Sing Song the Wildcats will play host to the Texans and TexAnns across town at McMurry's Kimbrell Arena.
The women's game will tip off at 5:30 p.m., followed by the men's game at 7:30 p.m. Both games will be broadcast live on KYYW 1470 AM.
The Wildcats continue their drive for a berth in next month's Lone Star Conference Post-Season Tournament in Bartlesville, Oklahoma. ACU currently sits at 5-3 in the South Division and tied for third place with Texas A&M-Kingsville.
Although the Wildcats only played one game last week and got a big win for ACU as they defeated Angelo State. The Wildcats currently sit at No. 10 in the South Central rankings and have reeled off 18 straight LSC South Division home wins. Tarleton State is currently ranked No. 6 in the South Central rankings and coming off a loss to No. 1 West Texas A&M.
ACU fell to Tarleton 64-70 in a game that seemed much closer than the score indicated. The Wildcats got as close as four on two different occasions in the last minute, but free throws by the TexAnns down the stretch sealed the win.
Kelsey Darby-Holson was the first non-Meyer to lead the Wildcats in scoring against TSU as she poured in 17 in the loss. However, ACU holds a commanding 13-3 record against the TexAnns in Abilene as Tarleton's last win on the Wildcats home court came in February 2007.
A pivotal game for both teams playoff chances however; ACU needs to win two of their last four games to earn a berth in the LSC Post-Season tournament. A win for the Wildcats would mean they could clinch their berth on Saturday in Wichita Falls against the Lady Mustangs. However, wins have been few and far between recently for the Wildcats at Midwestern as last year's win was the first in Wichita Falls since February 6, 1998, snapping a nine-game losing streak.
ACU's men will again be looking to play spoiler much as they did last season with their final four games all against teams fighting for a spot in the LSC Post-Season Tournament. The Wildcats dropped their fourth consecutive game last month to the Texans 63-83, however in the second half Eddie Thompson caught fire 17 points in the period finishing with a game high 24.
Tuesday night's game the Wildcats will be looking to end a two game skid in the LSC South and to the Texans. Tarleton State is the LSC leader in team scoring defense holding opponents to 56 points per game and the leader in scoring margin averaging a 14.2 point differential.
Another reminder that Tuesday's game will be played on the McMurry campus inside Kimbrell Arena. The women's tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. and can be heard in the Abilene area on KKYW 1470 AM live streaming online at acusports.com.
