
Wildcats fare well in Kentucky

LEXINGTON, Ky. -- The ACU Wildcats went 4-4 in singles and doubles play Friday on the first day of the University of Kentucky Invitational tennis tournament at the Hilary J. Boone Varsity Complex on the UK campus.
In Flight C singles, Jaclyn Walker won her first-round match with a 6-0, 1-6, 6-4 win over Minnette Pienaar of Kentucky. Walker will play in the quarterfinals Saturday at 9 a.m. against Sarah Lotto of Penn State, a 6-4, 2-6, 6-1 winner over Andra Voinea of East Tennessee State.
The winner of that match will advance to the semifinals, which will be played at 12:30 p.m. Saturday.
Also in Flight C singles, ACU's Julia Mongin lost her first-round match, dropping a 4-6, 6-1, 6-2 decision to Hanna Blatt of Vanderbilt. Mongin will take on Riley Blanks of Virginia in the consolation quarterfinals at 9:30 a.m. Saturday.
In Flight D singles, ina Pavlin won her first-round match Friday with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Anais Hamel of Eastern Kentucky. She'll take on Maria Fuccillo of Virginia at 10 a.m. Saturday. Fuccillo received a first-round bye into the quartefinals.
Also in Flight D, Cassie Carver dropped her first-round match, lsoing a tough 2-6, 6-4, 6-3 decision to Erica Robertson of Vanderbilt. Carver will play Christine Stromberg of Illinois at 9:30 a.m. Saturday in the consolation quarterfinals.
In Flight B doubles, Carver and Mongin teamed to beat the team of Diana Navrotska from East Tennessee State and Allie Hefter from Penn State, 8-6. But they then lost in the quarterfinals, falling out to the team of Kristina Minor and Christine Stromberg of Illinois, losing 9-8 (5).
In another Flight B doubles match, Walker and Pavlin dropped an 8-2 decision to the Vanderbilt team of Rachel Dillon and Keilly Ulery. Walker and Pavlin, though, beat the East Tennessee State team of Miranda Cameron and Andra Voinea, 8-2, in the consolation quarterfinals. Walker and Pavlin will play in the consolation doubles Saturday.
"We had a good day," ACU head coach Huton Jones said. "We were 4-4 against some really good competition, and it was a lot of fun. We've seen some really good competition that will only help us moving forward."
