ABILENE – Abilene Christian golfer Ian Evans and tennis players Hans Hach, Micah Hermsdorf and Hannah Kelley last week were tabbed Capital One NCAA Division II Academic All-District VI by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) in the at-large sports category.
The four Wildcats will have their names forwarded onto the Academic All-America ballot along with several dozen honorees from each of the eight districts. The Capitol One D-II Academic All-America at-large team will be announced Wednesday June 5.
Evans is a first time academic all-district honoree, while Hach, Hermsdorf and Kelley were all recognized for the second consecutive spring. Hermsdorf last year became her program's first Academic All-America since 2003 (Lacy Johnson), and earlier this spring she claimed her second Academic Player of the Year trophy from the Lone Star Conference.
A native of Spring, Texas, Hermsdorf completed her junior year with a 13-10 singles record and is currently ranked 15th in doubles with Kelley by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA). Hermsdorf and Kelley won 19 matches together, including 11 at the No. 2 position, and helped their team advance to the national semifinals for the second consecutive season.
Hermsdorf and Kelley are both advertising/public relations majors. Kelley, a senior from Richardson, Texas, earned her degree from ACU earlier this month.
Kelley went 15-5 as a singles player during her final year and won 23 doubles contests alongside several partners. She and Hermsdorf were named All-America in 2012 after finishing with a No. 4 national ranking.
A four-time all-America, Hach may well be on his way to receiving two additional citations later this spring after completing the regular season ranked sixth in singles and 10th in doubles with Guilherme Gesser. Hach compiled an 18-7 singles mark (18-8 in doubles) and last week was named the ITA's South Central Region Senior Player of the Year.
Hach also garnered a third Lone Star Conference Player of the Year certificate last month, and last fall he won his third consecutive USTA/ITA regional singles title.
A two-time conference all-academic honoree and native of Culiacan, Mexico, Hach graduated from ACU with a degree in management.
Evans competed through nine tournaments and 26 rounds during his first full season as a Wildcat after redshirting last spring. The San Antonio native averaged a score of 78.3 and twice matched his career low round of 74 at the NCAA D-II West/South Central Regional played two weeks ago.
The Lone Star Conference previously honored Evans for his grades, giving him a spot on its 2013 all-academic team and 2012 Commissioner's Honor Roll.
Eligible sports for the at-large program include bowling, crew, fencing, field hockey, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse, rifle, skiing, swimming, tennis, men's volleyball, water polo and wrestling.
To be nominated, a student-athlete must be a starter or important reserve with at least a 3.30 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) at his/her current institution, and have participated in at least 50 percent of the team's matches.
