ABILENE – Abilene Christian University seniors Alex Carpenter and Julia Mongin were honored Tuesday night at the ACU Athletics Awards Banquet as the winners of the Paul Goad Award for the 2012-13 athletic year.
The Paul Goad Award signifies the top male and female athlete at ACU each year. Goad was a three-sport student-athlete at ACU in the mid-1950s and the award bearing his name has been handed out to ACU student-athletes since his death in November 1978.
Carpenter also claimed a share of the Horizon Award with quarterback Mitchell Gale. This award is presented to those student-athletes whose single-season performances result in extraordinary career achievements. A three-time all-America in golf, Carpenter is the first non-football or track and field athlete to receive this honor.
Carpenter's magnificent career came to a close earlier this week, but his legacy will cast a long shadow on the ACU golf program for years to come.
Carpenter leaves the Wildcats with 20 collegiate tournament victories, a number that is believed to be the NCAA record for all divisions, surpassing the previous record of 16 set by PGA legend Phil Mickelson, who is generally regarded as the greatest collegiate golfer ever.
During his four-year career, Carpenter carded 33 rounds in the 60s and has won two Lone Star Conference championships. He's also qualified for two Palmer Cup teams during his ACU tenure, and he won the Southern Amateur in July 2010 against a field of the best collegiate golfers in the world. That win earned him an exemption to play the following March at the Arnold Palmer Invitational in Orlando, Fla., where he became the first active ACU player to play in a PGA Tour event. He shot a second-round 69 in the tournament as a college sophomore.
After he won four tournaments as a freshman he was given the Phil Mickelson Award as the Most Outstanding Freshman in NCAA Division II men's golf. After he won seven tournaments as a sophomore he was presented the Jack Nicklaus Award as the NCAA Division II Player of the Year. He has the inside track on winning that award again in 2013 after winning five tournaments this season, including four straight earlier this spring.
Mongin is one of the most honored and distinguished players in the celebrated history of Abilene Christian tennis. During an illustrious four-year career, she has been named all-America four times, all-conference eight times and won five regional championships to go along with being voted Lone Star Conference Player of the Year three straight years.
Mongin was an immediate sensation for the Wildcats as she completed her first spring with a singles record of 22-5 and earned the first of two all-America citations with doubles partner Jaclyn Walker. She also made all-conference in doubles and singles, an accomplishment that would be subsequently repeated over the next three seasons.
As a sophomore the following year Mongin was promoted for good to No. 1 singles after winning two major singles championships during the fall. First she defeated six consecutive D-I opponents at the Racquet Club Collegiate Invitational before winning her first of three straight USTA/ITA South Central Regional titles. Mongin finished her first spring as ACU's top player with an 18-6 record and earned the title of all-America.
Mongin again received all-America honors in 2012 after finishing with a No. 2 national ranking and leading her team into the national semifinals behind an overall record of 17-1. And this past fall, she won her first regional doubles titles since 2010 alongside partner Brittney Reed.
Mongin owns an all-time record of 165-31 (.842) heading into this week's NCAA Championship, an event which she's been part of the last four years.
Over four outstanding seasons, Gale added his name to the list of great ACU quarterbacks by re-writing not only the ACU record book, but the Lone Star Conference record book as well. In 42 games as the starting quarterback covering four seasons, Gale led the Wildcats to a 30-12 record, one conference championship in 2010, one undefeated regular season in 2010 and three NCAA Division II playoff berths.
He finished his career as the leading passer in both ACU and LSC history with 12,109 yards. He also finished his career as the LSC and ACU record-holder for completions with 931, attempts with 1,513 and total offense with 12,080 yards. His 30 wins tie Billy Malone for the most in a career by an ACU starting quarterback.
A three-time all-LSC selection, Gale was a finalist for the Harlon Hill Award in 2010 and was the 2012 NCAA Division II Pre-Season Player of the Year by Lindy's Magazine.
Gale is participating in this week's rookie minicamp for the St. Louis Rams.
