ABILENE – After practicing in an empty gym the past two weeks ACU volleyball held an open scrimmage inside Moody Coliseum on Saturday afternoon. Head coach Kellen Mock and her Wildcats worked through four sets in a regular season type atmosphere.
“We've been challenged every day in practice and it's good to see the girls come out and compete,” said Mock.
Each lineup varied in the four sets with a lineup mixed throughout the depth chart. With returners making up most of the starting lineup a few new faces have stepped to the front pushing for playing time.
“We have 15 great players and everyone could see playing time at anytime,” Mock said. “It's a good problem to have as coach; we have more depth at every position for the first time in five years.”
Returners Shawna Hines, Jordan Schilling, EJ Moronu, and Jennie Hutt showed why they were a part of helping the Wildcats finish 29-6 last season. Hines continued where she finished last season as the NCAA DII leader in blocks, while Schilling and Hutt followed up a solid performance at outside hitter.
Freshmen Neely Borger was also impressive playing next to Hines at middle blocker.
“Neely (Borger) has had a great camp. She is very quick and athletic and brings a winning attitude to a team of winners,” said Mock.
Borger helped Amarillo High complete a four-peat with current teammate Madelyn Robinett. The tandem won four straight 5A State Championships for the Sandies and will continue the winning attitude for a team that finished the season on a 17 match winning streak.
Next to Borger at middle blocker was Heather Leyva who has also had a solid camp. The sophomore saw action last season and added 25 blocks to a solid middle for the Wildcats.
ACU returns to their regular schedule this week before leaving for the Marriott / Residence Inn Oredigger Volleyball Classic, hosted by Colorado School of Mines. The Wildcats open with Fort Lewis and Slipper Rock University (Pa.) on September 3 before closing out the tournament on Saturday with Regis College and Mesa State.
