ABILENE – ACU head baseball coach Britt Bonneau announced Friday that he has added 14 players for the upcoming 2011 season.
Bonneau and assistant coach Brandon Stover added six junior college transfers and four NCAA Division I transfers and signed four high school players to national letters-of-intent.
The junior college transfer haul includes infielder Duncan Blades (Salt Lake Community College), outfielder Henry Castaigne (Navarro Junior College), outfielder J.R. Roland (Salt Lake C.C.), pitcher / outfielder Kris Carlson (Wenatchee Valley C.C.), pitcher Andrew Ponton (Howard College), and outfielder Bryce Gerhardt (Feather River College).
The NCAA Division I transfers are shortstop Reed Watson (University of Houston), infielder Peter Goudeau (Sam Houston State), pitcher Brady Rodriguez (Ball State), and catcher / first baseman Jack Hall (University of Hawaii).
The high school signees are pitcher Jason Harris (Lake Travis High School), pitcher Michael Smith (Liberty Christian High School), outfielder Taylor Davis (Boerne Champion High School), and first baseman Cody Allsup (Red Oak High School).
ACU is coming off the first 50-win season in program history (50-15 in 2010), but will have to replace all four infielders that started at the NCAA Division II region tournament (first baseman Bret Bochsler, second baseman Chris Hall, shortstop Willie Uechi and third baseman Steve Camillucci), one outfielder (Travis Latz) and one of the top starting pitchers in the region (Cameron Aspaas). All Uechi did in his four years at ACU was play in every game the Wildcats played over those four season, start every game at shortstop his last two seasons and set the Lone Star Conference record for career at-bats and career hits.
Goudeau could be the man to replace Hall at second base after Hall started there for two seasons for the Wildcats, while Watson could be Uechi's replacement at shortstop. ACU head coach Britt Bonneau said he expects Roland to play right field and hit in "the four or five spot in the lineup and drive in a lot of runs."
Castaigne will be in the mix for an outfield spot and could hit either No. 2 or No. 8 in Bonneau's lineup. Blades "brings high intensity to our team, can play any infield position and will hit in the middle of the lineup," Bonneau said.
Aside from playing in the outfield, Carlson will either be used as a Tuesday starter or as a setup man for ACU closer Brad Rutherford.
ACU will open the 2011 season on the road with a single game at St. Mary's in San Antonio on Feb. 1. ACU's first home series of the season will be a Lone Star Conference series against Incarnate Word, Feb. 4-5.
