ABILENE -- ACU senior forward Jamie Meyer has been voted first team NCAA Division II all-South Central Region by the region's sports information directors.
The team – sponsored by Daktronics – is led by regional Player of the Year Cassandra Boston of Emporia State (Kan.). Rounding out the first team are Meyer, Joni Unruh and Jamie Simmons of West Texas A&M and Dayna Rodriguez of Washburn.
The second team consists of ACU forward Jody Meyer, Central Oklahoma forward Ashley Beckley, Northeastern State forward Jasmine Webb, Incarnate Word guard Nia Torru, St. Edward's guard Kelli Payton, Texas-Permian Basin guard Tammy Acosta and Fort Hays State guard Naomi Bancroft.
Jamie Meyer, a senior from Round Rock, Texas, led the region in scoring, finishing ninth in NCAA Division II women's basketball in scoring at 21.0 points per game. A two-time first team all-LSC South Division selection, Meyer was voted to the LSC Post-Season all-Tournament team last week after she scored a tournament-record 44 points in ACU's 111-105 triple-overtime loss against Central Oklahoma.
Boston, a senior from Des Moines, Iowa, was a unanimous first team all-MIAA selection this season and was voted the league's Player of the Year after leading the MIAA in scoring with 19.4 points per game and finishing third in assists with 3.9 assists per game. Boston led Emporia State to a 24-5 regular-season record and the No. 4 seed in this week's NCAA Division II South Central Region Tournament in Canyon. Boston, a second team all-region selection last year, is the only one of the 10 players on this year's team that was voted all-region in 2009.
Unruh, a junior from Amarillo, Texas, was the regular-season MVP in the LSC South Division and was voted the LSC Post-Season Tournament MVP after leading the Lady Buffs to their third straight conference title last weekend in Bartlesville, Okla. Unruh averaged 13.9 points, 5.7 rebounds and 3.4 assists per game to lead West Texas A&M to a 29-3 record and the top seed in this week's regional tournament.
Simmons, a sophomore from Houston, was a first team all-LSC South Division selection in her first season as a Lady Buff. She led West Texas A&M in scoring (14.6 points per game), rebounding (7.7 rebounds per game) and total blocked shots (23).
Rodriguez, a senior from Havana, Cuba, led Washburn to its sixth MIAA championship in the last eight years last week as the Lady Blues topped Central Missouri in the title game. Rodriguez was voted to the all-tournament team as Washburn earned the No. 2 seed in this week's regional tournament. She averaged a team-best 15.0 points this season and is second on the team in rebounding at 7.2 boards per game.
The five players selected to the first team are eligible for the 2010 Daktronics all-America women's basketball team that will be voted on next week.
The team is sponsored by Daktronics, Inc., an acknowledged world leader in scoring, timing and programmable display systems for virtually every sport at every level of competition. Voting for the all-region and All-America teams is powered by ATHLETICSITE.COM.
