Wildcats going to Bartlesville

WICHITA FALLS -- Just a few days ago, it seemed that Midwestern State had put the ACU women's basketball season in serious jeopardy.
A 64-61 loss to the Mustangs left the Wildcats needing a win and some help just to get into next week's Lone Star Conference Post-Season Tournament in Bartlesville, Okla.
Wednesday night in the same gym where the Wildcats' season was put on life support, they got the help they needed to ensure their season would extend beyond Saturday's regular-season finale at West Texas A&M.
Midwestern State -- which before last Saturday's win over ACU hadn't won an LSC South Divisoin game this season -- won its second straight division game with a 69-67 win over Angelo State at D.L. Ligon Coliseum.
The win didn't eliminate the Rambelles from the chase for the post-season tournament, but it did ensure the Wildcats would play in the tournament for the fourth straight season and for the 23rd time overall, the most appearances of any team in the LSC.
The Wildcats are actually now in third place in the LSC South with a 6-5 division record. Texas A&M-Kingsville lost Wednesday night at home against Texas A&M-Kingsville to fall to 6-5 on the season. The Wildcats and Javelinas split a pair of games this season, but ACU owns the tiebreaker edge over Kingsville because of its win earlier this season over LSC South Division champion West Texas A&M.
Both the Wildcats and Javelinas will conclude their regular seasons Saturday with ACU playing at West Texas A&M and Kingsville at Eastern New Mexico. If ACU and Kingsville finish with the same division record (either 7-5 or 6-6) the Wildcats will enter the tournament as the No. 3 seed form the LSC South.
Because of Kingsville's loss on Wednesday, the Rambelles are not out of the chase for a spot in the post-season tournament. The only way Angelo State can reach its 10th straight conference tournament is to beat Tarleton State in San Angelo on Saturday and get help from Eastern New Mexico in the form of a win over Texas A&M-Kingsville.
If that happens, both ASU and Kingsville would finish 6-6 in the league. In that case, ASU would own the tiebreaker over the Javelinas because the Rambelles swept the Zias this season while the Javelinas would have split with ENMU.
If Kingsville wins Saturday in Portales, N.M., and ACU wins in Canyon, the Wildcats would earn the No. 3 seed and the Javelinas the No. 4 seed because of its season sweep of the Lady Buffs. However, if the Javelinas win and the Wildcats lose, the Javelinas would go to the tournament at 7-5 and the No. 3 seed, while the Wildcats would go to the tournament at 6-6 and the No. 4 seed from the LSC South.
The tournament begins Wednesday (March 3) with four men's quarterfinal games at the Bruin Fieldhouse in Bartlesville, Okla., with four men's quarterfinal games.
If the Wildcats enter the tournament as the No. 3 seed, they will play their quarterfinal game next Thursday at 6 p.m. against LSC North Division runner-up Central Oklahoma. If they enter the tournament as the No. 4 seed, they will play next Thursday at 2:30 p.m. against LSC North Division champion Northeastern State.
