ABILENE -- Midwestern State shot an even-par 284 Monday to take a four-shot lead after the first round of the Charles Coody West Texas Intercollegiate golf tournament at the Diamondback Golf Club.
The opening round of the tournament was delayed by almost 90 minutes because of rain, and once the round started the Mustangs took advantage of the soft greens to take the first-round lead.
The Mustangs had two players shoot under 70 on the day with A.J. Pursley shooting a three-under-par 68 and Chad Bryant firing a two-under-par 69. Pursley is tied for the individual lead with Corey Gilbert of Southeastern Oklahoma State.
Southeastern Oklahoma State is in second going into Tuesday's final round with a total of 288, which ties the Savage Storm with Our Lady of the Lake. Newman (Kan.) is in fourth at 289, followed by Dallas Baptist, St. Mary's and Texas Wesleyan at 292. The ACU Wildcats are tied with their own JV squad for 11th at 295, just seven shots out of the lead.
Freshman Adam Carpenter led the Wildcats with a two-under-par 69, followed by his twin brother Alex Carpenter, who shot a 74. Cyril Bouniol and Kyle Dickerson each shot 76s with Kregg Wood shooting an 80. Playing for the JV team, Tyler Sheppard and Sam Smith each shot 70s.
