ABILENE -- Four ACU baseball standouts have been voted to two more all-America baseball teams, which were released Friday.
Junior relief pitcher Brad Rutherford and senior catcher #Jordan Schmitt# were each voted to the National Collegiate Baseball Writers' Association team, while Schmitt, senior outfielder Thomas Bumpass and junior shortstop Willie Uechi were each voted to the Daktronics all-America team.
Rutherford was voted second team all-America on the NCBWA team, while Schmitt was voted third team all-America. Both players were voted to the American Baseball Coaches' Association / Rawlings all-America team, which was released last week. Schmitt was a first team all-America selection, while Rutherford was a second team pick.
Schmitt was voted second team all-America on the Daktronics team, while Bumpass and Uechi were each voted honorable mention all-America on the Daktronics team.
Schmitt is the fifth Wildcat in program history to earn first team all-America honors, joining second baseman Ronny Haring (1997), relief pitcher Jameson Maj (2007), outfielder Mike Elkerson (2008) and designated hitter Trey Watten (2008) on the list. Designated hitter Joel Wells (2006) is the only other Wildcat to earn second team all-America honors.
Schmitt led the Wildcats to a 44-19 record in 2009 as ACU won the Lone Star Conference championship and earned a berth in its eighth NCAA regional tournament since 2000. Schmitt finished his career as the LSC and ACU all-time leaer in hits (281), doubles (70), RBI (218) and total bases (470).
Schmitt – a three-time all-LSC performer and the 2009 LSC co-MVP – is also ACU's all-time leader in home runs (31), is second in at-bats (799), runs scored (209) and triples (13) and is sixth in stolen bases (46). He set career highs in every offensive category in 2009, hitting .373, while collecting career-bests in hits (91), runs scored (66), doubles (21), triples (5), home runs (13), RBI (93), total bases (161), and stolen bases (22).
Rutherford was just about automatic coming out of the Wildcats' bullpen in 2009. Opponents hit just .222 against him and he forged an ERA of 2.63 while going 10-3 with 11 saves, becoming the first player in LSC history to record double-digit figures in both wins and saves in the same season.
Bumpass – a first team all-region selection – hit .400 with 44 RB and 21 stolen bases, and he made just three errors as the Wildcats' starting centerfielder. Uechi led the Wildcats in hitting at .415, finishing sixth in the country in hits (97) and finishing third on the club with 56 runs scored and 42 RBI.
