ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. ? The ACU men's and women's tennis teams continue their national championship quests Wednesday when they each play in the Round of 16 at the NCAA Division II national championship tournament at Sanlando Park.
The ACU women (26-5 overall and ranked No. 6 in the nation) will play their first match in the tournament at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday against Drury (Mo.), which enters the tournament at 22-4 overall and ranked No. 25 in the nation.
The ACU men (26-7 overall and ranked No. 14 in the nation), meanwhile, has a tougher opening-round assignment as they will take on seventh-ranked Georgia College, which enters the match at 18-3 overall. The match will get started at 7 a.m. Wednesday.
The ACU women are making their 14th straight appearance in the national and 22nd overall, while the men are in their third straight national tournament and are making their 11th overall appearance.
The ACU women haven't advanced past the first round since 2006 and haven't made it past the quarterfinal since 1996, mostly because they have played one of the trio of BYU-Hawaii, Lynn (Fla.) and West Florida, the three teams that have dominated the Division II women's tennis landscape over the last 10-plus years.
However, this year the Wildcats have a solid chance to advance to the semifinals for the first time since 1996 when they reached the championship match before losing to Armstrong Atlantic in the title match. With a win over Drury, the Wildcats would move into the quarterfinals were they would face either 48th-ranked Concordia College of New York (15-2) or unranked Nebraska-Kearney (19-6).
A quarterfinal victory would then send the Wildcats into the national semifinals on Friday where they would likely face either top-ranked BYU-Hawaii (26-0) or No. 2 Lynn (25-0). BYUH and Lynn will likely match up in the quarterfinals on Thursday.
On the men's side, if the Wildcats get past Georgia College, they will likely take on No. 2-ranked Barry (Fla.), which enters the tournament at 24-2.
