RICHARDSON -- Abilene Christian had 10 first-team picks and two individual award winners honored Thursday when the football post-season awards for the Lone Star Conference South Division were announced by league officials.
The Wildcats had five players on the first team offense and two more on the first team defense, plus Offensive Lineman of the Year Tony Washington as well co-Defensive Back of of the Year Tony Harp. In addition to the 10 first team selections, the Wildcats had 11 more players voted either second team or honorable mention all-LSC South Division to give them 21 honorees.
The Wildcats (8-3) are the No. 6 seed in NCAA Division II Super Region Four and will be in Wichita Falls on Saturday to take on Midwestern State in a noon first-round playoff game at Memorial Stadium. The Wildcats are making their fourth straight playoff appearance, while the Mustangs are in the playoffs for the first time since 2006.
LSC co-champion Tarleton State had 14 players honored on the first- and-second teams with six on ofense and eight on defense, including Linebacker of the Year Marcus Phillips.
Midwestern State and Texas A&M-Kingsville -- which also won a share of the LSC crown -- each had 10 athletes on the top two teams. The Mustangs and Javelinas each had six players on offense and four on defense.
The Wildcats' 10 first-team selections are the third-highest total in program history, while the 21 overall selections are tied for the second-most in program history. Over the last four seasons the Wildcats lead the LSC with 47 first-team selections and 86 overall selections.
"I'm really proud of our players for the hard work they've put in over the last 10 months to prepare themselves for the season, and our success is proof of that hard work," ACU head coach Chris Thomsen said. "Our coaching staff deserves a lot of credit as well for the hours they put in to get our guys ready to play. I'm very lucky to be able to work with such great coaches."
Aside from Washington and Harp on the first team offensive and defensive units, respectively, the other Wildcats voted first team were fullback Justin Andrews, wide receiver Edmund Gates, offensive guard Royland Tubbs, punt returner Kendrick Johnson, nose guard Marvin Jones, defensive end Aston Whiteside, and linebackers Kevin Washington and Courtney Lane.
ACU's second-team selections were running backs Reggie Brown and Daryl Richardson, tight end Trey Simeone, center Matt Webber, linebacker Fred Thompson, punter Mark Sprague and deep snapper Cody Brown. ACU's honorable mention selections were offensive guard Levi Wolfe, offensive tackle Trevis Turner, cornerback Drew Cuffee and safety Major Culbert.
