
2 Wildcats move to third round

ABILENE -- ACU's John Strahl and Bryan Joiner each won a pair of singles matches Friday on the first day of the ITA South Central Region championships at the Eager Tennis Center.
Strahl and Joiner will each play third-round matches Saturday morning as they try to win the regional championship and advance to the ITA Small College championships later this month in Alabama.
Joiner beat Max Moreau of Incarnate Word, 7-6 (3), 6-2 in the second round, while Strahl knocked off Newman's Jurak Surgovy, 6-3, 6-3, in the second round. Joiner will play Northwest Missouri's Felipe Gennari early Saturday morning in the third round, while Strahl takes on No. 8 seede Jorge Gerosi of Cameron.
Luke Hawk -- who won his first-round match with a 7-5, 6-2 win over Newman's Kevin Klein -- fell to East Central's Andres Nunez in the second round, falling 6-2, 6-3. Brett Proctor also won his first-round match with a 7-6, 6-2 win over Washburn's Emmanuel Laurent before falling, 4-6, 6-4, 10-8 loss to Cameron's Thomas Peixoto.
Eldad Campbell, ACU's highest seed at No. 7, fell to Northwest Missouri's Luke Joyce 3-6, 6-1, 10-7 in the first round, and Washburn's Simon Blondin beat ACU's Cody McCarty 6-3, 6-5 in the first round.\
In doubles action, Hawk and Joiner teamed up for a 6-3, 6-1 win over Southeast Oklahoma's Cortes and Alejandro Jose in the first-round of doubles play. ACU's Campbell and Proctor also won their first-round doubles match, easing past East Central's Nunez and Stefan Stein 6-2, 6-1. Cameron's Daniel Bonamigo and Jorge Gerosi beat ACU's Dennis Roy and Strahl in their first-round doubles match.
Play begins at 8:30 a.m. today with two matches each in singles and doubles. The singles semifinals and finals will be Sunday, with the doubles finals also Sunday. Winners in each advance to ITA National Small College Championships on Oct. 15-18 at the Copeland-Cox Tennis Center in Mobile, Ala.
