RICHARDSON – The Lone Star Conference released the preseason picks and awards for the upcoming basketball season on Tuesday.
ACU was picked to finish third in the South Division behind West Texas A&M who reached the Elite Eight last season. Tarleton State received 110 votes, just two more than the Wildcats for second. Angelo State was picked to finish fourth followed by Texas A&M-Kingsville, Midwestern State, and Eastern New Mexico.
Senior Jamie Meyer was named Lone Star Conference Preseason Player of the Year in the South Division. Meyer was an All-LSC South Division first team pick a year ago as she averaged 14 points per game. Helping lead the Wildcats to a birth in the NCAA regional tournament Meyer has played in all 87 games in her three years. Meyer finished second in the LSC shooting 81 percent at the free throw line and 42 percent from behind the three point arc.
The Wildcats women's basketball team opens the 2009-10 season with an exhibition game on Friday against Lubbock Christian at Moody Coliseum.
With a seasoned group returning to the floor the Wildcats will look for their first back-to-back trips to the regional tournament since 1997-98 and 1998-99. And they'll be among the favorites to finish in the top four of the Lone Star Conference South Division and earn a trip to the LSC Post-Season Tournament for a fourth straight season.
The Lady Chaps who are members of the NAIA were picked to finish fourth in the Sooner Athletic Conference. LCU also reached the NAIA tournament last season finishing ranked No. 10 in the country.
Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. inside Moody Coliseum. The Wildcats will finish the exhibition schedule on November 9 at Southern Methodist in Dallas.
